Singer and TV/movie actor Chris Isaak is about to play in Australia again, so the timing is right for the release of this disk of tracks drawn from his 2006 Melbourne shows.
The man with the seductive Southern twang has justifiably attracted a worldwide fan base, and here he works live audiences with faithful renditions of his popular songs.
An energetic “Speak of the Devil” kicks things off, but it isn’t all flash country blues. Isaak isn’t afraid to push the button labelled “sentiment”; he channels Elvis on a crooning “I’ll Go Crazy” that is delivered with a little punch from his Silvertone band and embellished with a tear-jerking Presley-style anecdote.
The band then provides a thumping beat behind the plaintively rendered “Go Walkin’ Down There”, before the gorgeous sobbing of “Wicked Game”, which features one of Isaac’s trademarks – the beautifully held long note.
Sometimes the performances are closer to mere competence than inspired excitement. “Lonely with a Broken Heart”, for instance, chugs along reasonably well but has to wear a corny intro and outro – at least these are delivered with that warm drawl. “Somebody’s Crying” is lacklustre, and it takes the insertion of a Latin drumming moment to lift “San Francisco Nights”.
Still, there are highlights. A growling “Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing” is bracketed with more patter but rises above that, and Isaak capably follows the master with his version of the classic Roy Orbison song “Only the Lonely”, though without Orbison’s intensity (and also without the original chorus of dum-dee-do-wahs).
Isaak fans are unlikely to be troubled by the lack of surprises here. It’s the charm of that voice that matters. Sing along or cry along; either way is fine.
