This latest film from acclaimed
Shine director Scott Hicks could well become an Australian classic.
The Boys are Back is a touching drama starring the brilliant Clive Owen. He plays Joe – a dry, cynical British sports journalist who is never short of a quip.
In scenes that could well serve as a tourism ad for this state, the film shows Joe’s ideal ex-pat lifestyle in regional South Australia with his beautiful Australian wife and their young son, Artie.
But after his wife’s sudden death, Joe is left alone to care for Artie. His pain and anguish are movingly conveyed – he doesn’t know how to cope with his grief or how to bring up a child.
His initial response of spoiling Artie leads to the boy running wild, and Joe's parents-in-law are not happy. Joe is also trying to juggle his journalism career and there doesn't seem to be enough room for anything else.
When he meets local woman Laura, there is an instant attraction, but Joe can't let go of his love for another woman.
Meanwhile, his teenage son Harry, from a previous marriage, arrives on his doorstep from the UK, so now he has to look after two boys. Joe needs to learn how to become a father and not a friend.
With themes similar to those of hits such as Kramer Vs Kramer and About a Boy, The Boys Are Back is a true “family-love” story.
