Fringe Festival review: Let It Be Beatles

08 Mar, 2010 08:13 AM
One night only – sold out. The Beatles still draw a crowd and a good one at that, crammed in as they were at the Queens (Cavern) on Friday night to witness Adelaide's Let It Be Beatles cover band cover the band.

Over a two-hour-plus set of hits from Rubber Soul, Revolver, Abbey Road and Sgt Peppers, and a few more besides, John, Paul, George and Ringo, alias Mick, Troy, Mick and Paul (I think), re-created in a Wright Street way a smidgin of the hysteria that once engulfed the Fab Four.

What surprises me is not just that it had me up and dancing, but the fact that a band that can obviously play so well isn’t playing in its own right. Then again, given Adelaide's precariously over-populated live music scene, perhaps Beatlemania is still a prudent box-office drawcard.

People want nostalgia and good music, and the Let It Be boys delivered both on a not-so-smoky night at the Queens. Whatever the Beatle's version of the ’60s was – the mayhem, madness and lip of the mesmeric mop-tops – one thing was certain during the encore of “Hey Jude” in this show: yesterday isn't so far away after all.

From The Cavern To The Rooftop, Queens arms, March 5.
