Did you know there are varying degrees of op shoppers? The ‘Just a Bit of Fun’ type, who enjoy a look more than a buy; the ‘Practical with Money’ sort, who rarely buy more than what they need; the ‘Green’ kind, who feel good about buying recycled goods and don’t mind helping out the community at the same time; and the ‘Die Hards’, who never seem to have enough crocheted blankets and retro platters. Now there are even ‘Professionals’, who have made a legitimate business out of the activity.
Having made an absolute splash in Melbourne, Joanne O’Callaghan brings her love of op shopping to the Adelaide Fringe Festival. Hop on the bus and tour your city and it’s surrounds as you never have before: by way of the Salvos, Vinnies, churches with lovely smiling ladies and a groovy little nook or two off the beaten path. Wherever you fit into the op-shop spectrum, there’s space for you on the bus. It’s a place of encouragement; one might even overhear advice from the elders. You may get hit by a stray lolly being tossed to the winner of an op-shop trivia question. But fun and games aside, the highlight isn’t the bus. It’s the adrenaline rush you’ll receive after spending your pocket money in the name of a great bargain. Didn’t think you needed flippers? Think again.
