Live review: Amity Dry in Tapestry – A Carole King Tribute Show

29 Jun, 2009 08:31 AM
Amity Dry clearly has a loyal following in Adelaide if the audience at her final performance of Tapestry at the Promethean is anything to go by. There was a real warmth in the applause of this largely older crowd, who hummed along to many of the great songs from the ’60s to the ’80s.

Dry is an understated and unpretentious performer. She just gets up and sings, along with her three-piece band and back-up vocalist Charmaine Jones. The show opens with a somewhat underpowered rendition of “I Feel The Earth Move” and doesn’t really pick up pace until mid-way through with a powerful interpretation of “So Far Away”.

Other highlights included “Smackwater Jack” and the James Taylor classic “You’ve Got a Friend”. Unfortunately, a number of the songs were undermined by a harsh mix and various microphone problems.

There are no accoutrements of cabaret here – no slinky evening frocks for the girls, no sharp black suits for the boys.; this is more “come as you are” cabaret.

Singer/pianist Charmaine Jones deserves a special mention for her superb backing vocals and engaging stage presence. Jones has a voice that spans gospel to jazz and musical theatre, and she shines at everything she does.

The intimacy of the old Promethean Theatre is perfect for cabaret, with its sexy new décor, and manager Mike Thomas takes care to make his patrons feel special.

Oh Please Diana, you were obviously not a fan of Carole King or James Taylor if you did not appreciate what Amity did on stage on Friday night. As you said the audience were warm and were humming along - what more could a performer want from her audience. As for the comment on the lack of "slinky outfits", have you ever seen Carole King?? A slinky outfit would certainly not be a tribute to her.

It is disappointing to read Diana's comments. The performance by Amity and her talented friends was a tribute show - surely an artist is allowed to put their interpretation on the songs? I thoroughly enjoyed her show (and am in my 30s, as did those sitting next to us in their 40s, 50s and 60s) and appreciated the variation in how songs were performed - ranging from heartfelt to upbeat, snippets with stories, use of the full band, to fantastic backing support from Charmaine and Amity's solos. To consider it necessary to present a show with cabaret 'accoutrements' is a discredit to both Amity and her audience. Does Adelaide need to continue to undermine local talent and their involvement in our fantastic Cabaret and Cabaret Fringe festivals? Surely the 'real warmth in the applause' from the crowd tells us another story? Well done Amity and hope to see you on stage again soon.
