This frenetic 90 minutes of non-stop songs is sure to flush out women of a certain disposition – that is, those whose “brains go void” then they “get annoyed”.
Spots light onto four women, skipping commitments to nick into a department store lingerie sale. They fight over bras and undies, then realise there’s the chance to learn a little, share stories, and come to terms with … memory loss, insomnia, night sweats, food, fat and fitness issues.
The thin thread of narrative ties the women in their store setting: Power Woman (Maria Mercedes), TV Star (Carolyn Waddell), Earth Mother (Cindy Pritchard) and Dubbo Housewife (Donna Lee). These are consummate actors with voices they can really throw – pretty Waddell, the soapie actor in denial about her ageing – has an opera background, and it shows, and lanky Mercedes belts out a great “Fever”. Pert Donna Lee invests each tiny gesture with the pedigree of her acting history.
Only Pritchard’s tone runs to the shrill, perhaps because her character’s the vegan who burnt her bras in the ’60s. Adelaide women probably didn’t manage that till the ’70s (if at all), instead stepping into DJs lifts with hat and gloves intact.
This set recalls those days with its clearly Elizabeth Street Sydney DJs’ art deco wooden lift doors cleverly doubling as rest rooms. Even if it doesn’t sit right as “Myers, Rundle Mall”, you can understand why this syndicated program (showing continually around the world since beginning in Orlando, Florida, in 2001, and helping raise funds locally for cancer research) tries to localise the content. Pity the plastic surgeons resident in Burnside for their cliché mention, though they can probably wear it.
With nary a pause between hits of the ’60s and ’70s, lyrics parody change-of-life topics, from “In the spare room/my husband sleeps tonight” to “It’s my body and I’ll cry if I want to”. It’s all about transformation, isn’t it, which is why women in the audience hooted in empathy. So if you missed it two years ago, best shake your jacket, and catch it quick.
