Top spots for festival fare

01 Mar, 2010 10:01 AM
The Adelaide Writers’ Week and Adelaide Festival always bring a flurry of requests for reliable places to eat, so this time we are going to beat you to it and give you a list.

There is a pocket version from the front of www.galaxyguides.com that can be printed out and put it in your wallet. It’s easy these days, with mobile phones, to ring ahead and make sure there is a table. If you are from a big city and feel reluctant to call a cab to get out of the city, think again: in Adelaide, you are only about 10 minutes from anywhere, whether you are going to Magill Estate Restaurant, Chloe’s Restaurant or Windy Point Restaurant for a big night out, the beach for a chill-out and coffee, or a local spot for breakfast or lunch.

BREAKFAST

Henley Kiosk at the Beach: The Esplanade, Henley Beach; open Wednesday-Monday, 7.30am until late afternoon; dog-friendly. A fab spot for an early afternoon walk to watch the para-surfers, and one of Adelaide’s best places for coffee.

Nano Ready To Go: 23 Ebenezer Place, Adelaide; ph 8227 0468; open Monday to Saturday, 7.30am-4.30pm. Food all day, fab coffee and everything is inexpensive. An Adelaide institution!

Chianti Classico: 160 Hutt Street, Adelaide; ph 8232 7955; www.chianticlassico.com.au. Another of Adelaide’s best coffee places and the staff won’t sneer at you if you order a couple of grappa or a bottle of French for breakfast.

Queen Street Café: 12 Elizabeth Street, Croydon; ph 8340 0708; open seven days for breakfast and lunch – Monday-Friday, 7.30am-4.30pm; weekends, 8am-4pm. Best for breakfast and near some very cool shops, especially One Small Room and Curious Orange Haircutters.

Other favourites in the McLaren vale region: Fino, D’Arry’s Verandah, The Kitchen Door.

CHEAP FAST AND GOOD

Check out www.galaxyguides.com – the list is regularly updated and reliable.

COOL THINGS

Adel aide City Bikes: This is a fabulous scheme and it’s free. You can collect a bike from several collection points – our favourite pick-up and drop-off, mainly because there is food and a nice cold beer at the end of it, is the Golf Links Par 3, located immediately behind River Cafè and Red Ochre Grill. You can park your car and ride to the beach along the bike track. Even for those who are not fit and want to take it slowly, the ride wouldn’t take more than an hour.

SHOPPING

I get really mad when people say there is no shopping in Adelaide. Sure, we don’t have a Louis Vuitton shop, but what we do have is a well-kept secret. We have Australia’s best-priced vintage and small antiques stores, and tremendous ’60s Danish and designer furniture.

A favourite city shop just across the road from the Adelaide Central Markets is Antique Market, at 32 Grote Street. Downstairs are endless small antiques, especially jewellery ranging from Victorian through to modern, with fantastic sections of costume pieces from the ’40s to the ’60s. We have also bought heaps of lovely small pieces of cutlery which we use in our catering. Upstairs is stuffed with fab vintage clothing.

Two other favourites are Hero Designs, which is just off of Rundle Street at 2 Ebenezer Place, and Exclusive Vintage Clothing at 35 Brand Road, Prospect. There are plenty more, so if you are from out of town, ask your friends.

The other shopping must in Adelaide is the Jam Factory, where exquisite one-off pieces can be purchased for a song. This retail space has recently received a dramatic makeover designed by Adelaide’s legendary craftsman Khai Liew. Khai Liew also has his own gallery on Magill Road, another street well worth wandering along.
