Victoria must lift water cap now: Rann

10 Dec, 2009 02:46 PM
Premier Mike Rann says Victoria needs to listen to the experts and lift its restrictive cap on Murray-Darling water trading as soon as possible.

The National Water Commission (NWC) and the Productivity Commission have assessed the water market and today condemned Victoria’s cap of 4 per cent on trading its water, an assessment welcomed by Mr Rann.

“This is a devastating indictment of Victoria’s position and intransigence”, Mr Rann said in a statement.

Mr Rann said the NWC and Productivity Commission’s recommendations indicate exactly why SA is arguing its case against the Victorians to the High Court.

“They must undertake to get rid of trade barriers as quickly as possible, because they’ve placed a handbrake on the whole reform of the River Murray.

"There is only one basin - the River Murray does not respect State borders," he said.

Right now we have moderate "flooding" in the northern rivers. Every five to seven years there is moderate to heavy flooding, however not one drop of this water ever reaches the mouth of the Murray. Why? Because irrigators are given free rein to pump as much as they are able into their storage tanks. This practice needs to stop immediately. The problems with the Murray can be alleviated a great deal if ALL irrigation were to be banned for a couple of weeks while rivers are in flood. Floods (high rivers) are a natural part of the life cycle of our rivers, yet they have not seen the benefits for a great many years. I recall flying over a small NSW cotton farm in the 90s during one such "flood". The pilot informed us that just this one small farm had pumped 40,000ML into their storage. This must stop!
