Coach likened to Satan over abuse

16 Mar, 2010 11:31 AM
A coach of junior basketballers who sexually abused three of his players acted "at the hands of Satan", one of his victims says.

Simon Bennett was taken into custody by the South Australian District Court today ahead of his sentencing for a string of child sex offences.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, one of his victims said his life and his prospects of playing basketball professionally had been ruined by the incident.

He described Bennett's offending as acts "at the hands of Satan" and questioned why the 37-year-old had never admitted his wrongdoing.

"If you're worried about a jail term, just think about spending eternity in hell," the victim said.

Last year Bennett was found guilty by a judge on six counts of indecent assault, four counts of unlawful sexual intercourse and one count of attempted indecent assault.

The offences occurred when he took junior basketball players on trips away and also had sleepovers at his house while coaching at a club in Adelaide between 1998 and 2006.

Prosecutor Peter Salu said Bennett's case was "textbook pedophilia" and was every parent's worst nightmare.

He said Bennett had acted in a predatory nature by gaining the trust of his victims, aged between 12 and 16, and their families, before building up to abuse.

Dr Salu said Bennett had shown no remorse or contrition and had continued to protest his innocence from his arrest through to the end of his trial.

But in his own statement to the court today a tearful Bennett admitted to his offending and said he was truly sorry.

"I deeply regret the pain and suffering I have caused anyone," he said.

"I knew it was wrong but I couldn't control it. Please forgive me and have mercy on me."

Judge David Lovell revoked Bennett's bail and remanded him in custody for sentencing later this month.
