Australia's largest DVD retail group EzyDVD has been sold to the Franchise Entertainment Group.
Corporate recovery specialist Ferrier Hodgson said on Thursday the sale involved the EzyDVD brand, the online business and the franchise network along with stock and equipment and 11 company-owned stores.
But 15 non-profitable stores have closed while the distribution facility and head office in Adelaide will also close within three months with the loss of about 30 jobs.
The company-owned stores were placed in receivership last December after a sales slump in 2007 and 2008 resulted in substantial operating losses.
The Franchise Entertainment Group is the management company for both the Video Ezy chain of DVD rental outlets and for Blockbuster.
Ferrier Hodgson partner David Kidman said on Thursday that the sale was a good result for EzyDVD's 32 franchisees and all employees.
"The Franchise Entertainment Group is one of the largest franchisors in the Australian retail market and has a high level of experience and knowledge in the industry," Mr Kidman said.
Franchise Entertainment Group director Paul Uniacke said he expected EzyDVD would maintain its position as a market leader because of its strong customer base.
"We recognised the strength of the EzyDVD brand and saw it as a natural fit with our existing businesses," he said.
