Greens to run open ticket in Frome

14 Jan, 2009 01:26 PM
The Greens will run an open ticket in the Frome by-election in South Australia on Saturday, refusing to direct their preferences to either of the major parties.

The poll will find a replacement in state parliament for former Liberal Premier Rob Kerin, who quit politics recently.

Greens candidate Joy O'Brien said the party would ask voters to give the Greens their first preference but then direct their further preferences to the party or candidate of their choice.

Ms O'Brien said Frome voters were concerned with health and education issues and local farmers also needed more support from the Government to adapt to a drier and warmer climate.

"Neither of the old major parties have demonstrated leadership in any of these areas of concern for people in Frome and, for this reason, will not be receiving Greens' preferences in this election," she said.
