Hundreds to support construction worker

11 Aug, 2009 08:13 AM
Hundreds are expected to rally outside a South Australian court in support of a construction worker fighting charges laid against him by the Australian Building and Construction Commission.

Ark Tribe faces a jail sentence of up to six months or a $22,000 fine for allegedly failing to attend a compulsory interrogation by the ABCC in 2008.

Today's hearing in Elizabeth Magistrates Court is expected to set dates for a trial.

Tribe's court appearance comes as the federal government plans to push through new laws that guarantee the continuation of the powers of the ABCC for at least five years under the new workplace umpire Fair Work Australia.

CFMEU SA secretary Martin O'Malley has urged the federal government to abandon its plans to guarantee the continuation of the ABCC and has warned any jail sentence imposed on Tribe would prompt Australian construction workers to take action.
