Labor pledges $109m for emergency departments

09 Mar, 2010 11:57 AM
South Australian Premier Mike Rann has promised $109 million to employ more than 100 extra medical staff in emergency departments if he wins the looming state election.

Mr Rann said today a re-elected Labor Government would use the funds to lower the times spent by patients in public hospital emergency departments.

Currently, patients spend five hours and 44 minutes on average while being treated at emergency departments, he said.

Mr Rann said the funding aimed to reduce that average to four hours or less for 95 per cent of patients.

The funding pledge also included $3.5 million a year to help hospitalised disabled patients access community accommodation and $2.5 million a year for more services for treating mental health patients.

Mr Rann is campaigning to be returned as premier for a third term at the March 20 election, with the Liberal Party needing to pick up 10 seats to win government.

I will believe it when I see it. Bed-block has been a critical problem for years and this government has done zero about it. Poorly performing EDs suit the political/financial agenda of this government; more horror stories just encourage people to go away.
