Labor wants changes to Parliament

15 Jul, 2009 05:11 PM
Premier Mike Rann pledged a referendum four years ago, saying then he wanted majority state-wide support to get rid of the Legislative Council, one of Parliament’s two houses.

Instead, the Government this afternoon announced it would introduce legislation to cut the number of MPs in the Upper House, which would make it harder for minor parties and independents to be elected.

The Government also wants to cut Upper House members’ terms in half and abolish fixed, four-year terms for government itself. This would give whichever party is in government a further advantage by letting it chose the election date.

Under the Government’s proposal, this would happen if it had a dispute over legislation with the Upper House.

The Liberal Party called the announcement a stunt to divert attention away from its handling of water, jobs, health and education issues.

What next Mr Rann? You planning on being "Premier for life"? Four year terms are there for a reason. The South Australian people have a right to choose theor form of Government every four years, not when it suits the Governemt of the day. Either abolish the upper house altogether or leave it alone.

Another broken promise by Mike Rann! This is all about greed for power, no good will come of this for South Australia. We need a good strong upper house to help us in our fight for good amd fair government. Whether its Mike Rann or who ever follows him, if given to much power we will end up with a 1980's Queensland style mess! Say NO. Hands off the Upper House Mike!
