Liberals on smear campaign, says Rann

15 Oct, 2009 01:36 PM
Senior Liberal MP Rob Lucas has told state parliament the Rann government has a `dirty tricks unit' that has peddled false claims including talk that he was an alcoholic.

Mr Lucas told parliament today that an "elaborate website has been constructed as a device to make untrue and defamatory allegations about me, such as corruption, fraud ... and condoning domestic violence against women".

Mr Lucas said he had been warned about reprisals if he kept attacking the premier and ministers. "Unless I backed off in my attacks on Rann ministers, they had a dirt file on all my activities over the years which they would release," Mr Lucas told parliament.

Mr Lucas labelled the premier a hypocrite, a claim Mr Rann said today was part of a Liberal smear campaign. "What they have done is basically decided to try and smear their way to election day, and I think the public will see through that and find it abhorrent," Mr Rann told reporters.

A state election will be held in March next year, with the Liberals to be led by Isobel Redmond.

Ms Redmond replaced Martin Hamilton-Smith as Liberal leader earlier this year after he used documents to attack Mr Rann which were later proved to be forged.

"The Liberals - we have seen them with their dodgy documents, we have seen them peddling forgeries, we have seen them peddling fake emails, fake receipts - that didn't work," Mr Rann said.

"The Liberals, divided as they are, are now in the process - they haven't got any policies for the future, they have got no unity - and they just think they can smear their way through the election."

He said Mr Lucas' claims were "absolutely untrue".

"They have gone from forgeries and peddling those fake receipts and fake emails, and now they are getting involved in this kind of I believe just totally reprehensible behaviour," Mr Rann said.

If the Liberals really wanted to dig up dirt they would have so much that they would need a dozen dump trucks to take it away. Mike Rann is just going on the front foot because he knows his Party closet is full of skeletons.
