The SA Football Commission has rejected a merger between the Port Adelaide Magpies and the AFL-based Port Power.
The decision could mean the end for 140-years of history with the Magpies now likely to fold at the end of the season.
The Magpies say they are disappointed but will now focus on their own future.
The club will be forced to sell assets including the Prince of Wales Hotel to pay debts and fund their final season.
Eight SANFL club directors voted to recommend against the merger last night.
Insiders say the commission’s decision could spell disaster for already low local football attendances.
They say without a black and white team the league’s appeal will drop.
Port Adelaide has one of the highest league attendances, pulling weekly crowds of about 4000. Before SA had an AFL team, revenue from Port and Norwood’s high attendance figures propped up clubs with lower supporter bases.
