Rann walks out of press conference

09 Mar, 2010 01:38 PM
Premier Mike Rann walked out on a “brutal” press conference at Lyell McEwen Hospital this morning as the Michelle Chantelois issue raised its head again.

The Premier, Health Minister John Hill and Families and Communities Minister Jennifer Rankine were announcing funding for elective surgery procedures.

A reporter opened questioning of the Premier with an inquiry based on polling in The Australian today showing a collapse in Mr Rann’s approval rating. The reporter was interested in whether Mr Rann regretted his initial responses to the Chantelois issue in the days after he was assaulted by her estranged husband Rick Phillips at the National Wine Centre in October.

Television reporters told Indaily the ensuing half hour was a “pretty brutal display” as the Premier tried to stick to his script on health while facing a barrage of questions about the affair including what was seen as a very personal retort to The Australian’s reporter Michael Owen where the Premier reportedly said; “I’ve got a marriage, you’ve got a marriage, it’s a private matter.”

After the Premier walked out, attempts by Ministers Hill and Rankine to get back on the health message were further derailed when Ms Rankine wandered back onto the subject of Ms Chantelois.

Adelaide must be the weirdest place in the the world, even more than 'only in USA'. Everywhere else men and women are denying having had an affair till they're blue in the face but here in the boondocks we have a woman wanting everyone to believe her that she had been sleeping with a politician. Is this not truly really really odd?

Well, ex South Australian who are you to judge? You just HAD to leave S.A. rather than stay and fight for this State. Thanks a lot. We're here fighting for this State and if you knew what was going on you might think twice before making judgement from Sydney or wherever you are.

To 'ex South Australian', we focus on this 'garbage' because the truth is important to us!

Is this journo Kevin Naughton the same Kevin Naughton who worked for the Liberal Party? Great balanced reporting by Gout and co

Yes, Kevin has worked for the Office of the Leader of the Opposition (but not the Liberal Party), as well as having been chief of staff with News Ltd’s Sunday, a presenter on ABC Radio 891, 2BL in Sydney and ABC Darwin. - Editor

This is the sort of garbage that drives intelligent people out of SA. With all the challenges and opportunities facing SA - you choose to focus on this sort of garbage.

I guess the affair is no longer sub-judice so the unanswered questions can be put again. Let's not feel too sorry for Mr Rann as he and his ministers have been famous for playing hard ball up to now.
