Stolen excavator trashes Adelaide Botanic Gardens

05 Aug, 2009 12:20 PM
Vandals using a stolen excavator caused thousands of dollars worth of damage chaos in the Adelaide Botanic Gardens overnight.

Police say the earthmover was stolen from a construction site next to the gardens about 2am.

About $30,000 of damage was caused when the thieves drove the excavator through archways, over garden beds and park benches before crashing it into the Botanic Gardens Café.

Graffiti was also found on the Cactus House, but it is not known if it is related to the excavator incident.

I am saddened by the destruction done by pathetic vandals in the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. Are these louts - as happens all too often - going to get off, remaining ignorant to the extent of their own idiocy. The disrespect of the people who put their own heart into the hard work involved in the upkeep of these gardens is just a part of what needs to be drawn to the attention of this sort of offender. Our system of law is way overdue to put this offender group on the job of truly repairing what they destroy - all the way. That means - whatever their age - when $30,000 worth of damage is done, then $30,000 worth of work- hard graft - needs to be returned by them. I'm not talking about a few hours of community service that isn't even compulsory to finish. I'm talking about day release, in which they are taken from lock-up and under adequate supervision, to the location of their offence, to face the people they have affected - whose work they have destroyed. Then they plant, they paint, they build and they apologise. They continue until $30,000 worth of work is complete. In full. Then they apologise until they mean it and are believed. However long it takes. I wish.
