Wong rejects Libs' $50m Coorong call

26 Aug, 2008 04:14 PM
The Federal Government has refused to support the coalition's calls for an immediate injection of $50 million to help save the Coorong wetlands and the lower lakes of the Murray River in South Australia.

Liberal Leader Brendan Nelson called for the emergency assistance last week to help struggling communities around the Murray mouth.

Climate Change and Water Minister Penny Wong responded to the Opposition's call by saying the government is already giving $320 million for the lower lakes.

She says $200 million is going to the South Australian Government to deal long-term with the issue and another $120 million is being spent on pipes to deliver water to irrigators' communities and to service townships.
