Declare sponsored travel: Xenophon

30 Mar, 2009 07:41 AM
Independent senator Nick Xenophon wants all MPs to declare sponsored travel to parliament within sixty days of taking their trip.

The senator plans to move the motion when parliament resumes after Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon revealed last week that he failed to declare two overseas trips while in opposition.

Under the proposed changes, MPs will have to reveal the funding source of any sponsored trips on a public website.

And if they fail to declare their travel within 60 days they will have to repay the cost of the trip in full.

Senator Xenophon said the changes will provide a level of scrutiny that the Australian taxpayer expects.

"If there is nothing wrong with taking a free trip, there should be nothing wrong with declaring a free trip," he said in a statement.

"This motion will remove the confusion in the minds of federal politicians.

"Ultimately all politicians should have one boss, and that is the Australian public."
