 Massive win for Redbacks

Massive win for Redbacks

08 Jan, 2010 07:18 AM
South Australia has staked a strong claim to host the domestic Twenty20 final and secure qualification for the lucrative Champions League with a brilliant performance against Victoria at Adelaide Oval.

The home side outplayed the highly-fancied Bushrangers with both bat and ball, posting a massive seven for 202 before skittling the Vics for just 111.

The win was set up by scintillating bating performances from openers Daniel Harris (48 off 33 balls) and Graham Manou (21 off 11).

Not to be outdone, West Indian Kieron Pollard slammed home the advantage in the waning overs of the first innings, smashing 52 of just 22 deliveries.

The chase required something special from the Victorians needing ten runs an over but they were unable to handle the pace of Shaun Tait who grabbed three wickets (for 12) from his two overs.

Two wickets from Mark Cleary left the Bushrangers reeling at five for 25 after five overs.

The merciless Redbacks refused to let the Bushrangers off the canvas striking blows with brilliant bowling and sharp fielding and when Dan Christian ran out Dwayne Bravo the visitors task looked insurmountable.

The scorecard was littered with great performances for the home side.

Tait and Cleary were aided by Christian who took two wickets with the ball, ran out Bravo and had a catch in the field.

Pollard claimed the final two wickets of the game.

The West Indian was undeniably the star of the show, treating the huge crowd to a display of brute force as he clubbed three boundaries and four sixes before being run out on the final ball of the South Australian innings.

Having raced to none for 51 after just four overs the Redbacks looked like winners from the start.

The Victorian bowlers attempted to curtail SA's early onslaught by mixing up their pace, forcing the batsmen to create their own power.

The home side's batsmen tried to combat the bowling tactics with some innovative hitting but only succeeded in gifting wickets to the Bushrangers.

Harris and Mark Cosgrove (15) were both out lobbing medium paced deliveries to fielders in the deep before Shahid Afridi provided the simplest of catches to Andrew McDonald with an unorthodox shot around his body.

A pleased but restrained Manou said his side's display was close to the perfect Twenty20 performance but he still sees room for improvment.

"There was a period there where we probably lost a few too many consecutive wickets," he said.

"The way we managed to finish the innings off was what we were after.

"To bust it open so well -- thats as good as Taity has bowled for some time.

"(We're) very happy, but still only three quarters of the way there yet."

Victoria's top scorer Aaron Finch praised the Redbacks but backed his side to bounce back.

"We've got alot of experienced guys in the side who will be able to regroup quickly and move on from that and prepare for the WA game," said Finch.

"I think South Australia are clearly the red hot favourites now."
