Fielding a fit team a vital aspect of coach Nielsen's expanding brief

07 Nov, 2009 02:30 AM
As coach of the national team, Tim Nielsen's foremost priority should be in developing and implementing tactics. But an increasing responsibility of his is to try and keep as many of his players out on the field as possible.

As players association chief Paul Marsh cited Australia's current injury crisis as ''evidence of the impact of such an enormous workload'' on the players, Nielsen said his priority had to be coping with the team's onerous schedule, rather than complaining about it. ''It does make it difficult but at the same time I think it is the same for pretty well everyone around world cricket at the moment,'' Nielsen said.

''We understand there are some different things going on with new tournaments - the Champions Leagues, IPLs, all these things. They all make the schedule a little more hectic. Up until now we felt like we've managed our players quite well. The schedule's there. We just have to adjust as well as we possibly can to get our players through.''

Nielsen said the current one-day series against India was indicative of the pressures on national teams to play more matches, declaring a five-match series that would have culminated overnight would have been a fitting end to a series that was locked at two-all until Thursday night.

''Both teams have had their opportunities over the four games to put a stamp on the games and neither team have taken it. They played very well in Nagpur, I thought we defended very well in Mohali and thought we played very well in the first game,'' he said.

''Five [games], to me, would be probably about right but … we know the reasons for seven-game series. There's television involved, all different things.''

Despite having lost four front-line players before the series and another five during it, Nielsen said the frustration of having no continuity with the team line-ups from game to game was offset by the experience the injuries have given players such as Moises Henriques (since departed due to injury), Clint McKay, Jon Holland and Burt Cockley.

''We're really excited about the young players we have around Australia. Every time somebody has a rest or gets hurt it gives another one of these young players an opportunity to play for Australia, and I don't think we've been let down too often by them.''
