Community broadcasting needs $14 million: Greens

05 Mar, 2009 01:09 PM
The Federal Government should spend $14 million this year to help Australia's community broadcasting stations build social inclusion during the financial crisis, the Greens say.

Greens communications spokesman Scott Ludlam said today the Government should allocate funding in the May budget towards investing in Australia's 436 community broadcasting stations.

With 70 per cent of community broadcasting licences in rural and regional areas, the sector plays a vital role in keeping Australians informed and bringing communities together, he said.

"This is all the more important at times like these, when the community is under mounting financial pressure," Senator Ludlum said in a statement.

"Community broadcasting ... can help build this cohesion."

The sector has been overlooked but the Government has an opportunity to turn that around in the 2009 budget, he said.

Senator Ludlum said community broadcasters have called for $14 million in funding for content development, infrastructure and training.

What a bunch of hog-wash; and what about community television? This money is only intended to further the business objectives of the community radio sector, which is primarily for transitioning to digital spectrum. If the community broadcasting association of australia really wants to support community broadcasting, they should be lobbying the federal government for both radio and television money; but no, since the television sector separated from the CBAA in 2008, they have very little relationship with the television sector. So what now? This is public tax dollars and I know the federal government has a lot more bigger fish to feed; and not going towards increased commercialism such as the community broadcasting sector.
