Former ABC journalist freed from Singapore jail

23 Jun, 2009 03:00 PM
Former ABC foreign correspondent Peter Lloyd has been freed after spending six months in a Singapore prison for drug offences.

A spokesman for the Singapore Prison System on Tuesday confirmed Lloyd had been released from Changi prison four months before the end of his sentence due to good behaviour.

"We can confirm that Peter is no longer in our custody," the spokesman told AAP.

Lloyd was jailed in December for 10 months for possessing a small amount of methamphetamine, or ice, and implements used to consume it.

Lloyd's lawyer, Hamidul Haq, said he had not yet heard from the prison or from his client.

"I do not know for a fact whether he has in fact been released from jail, or whether he has been taken to the airport," Haq told AAP.

Authorities may allow Lloyd to stay in Singapore for a few days, or may seek to deport him immediately, Haq said.

Lloyd was arrested in July while he was on leave as the ABC's South Asia correspondent, based in Delhi.

Authorities initially charged him with drug trafficking, which could have landed him in jail for up to 20 years, but later dropped that charge.

At the time of his sentencing, Haq told the judge Lloyd turned to drugs because he suffered from severe post-traumatic stress disorder, which he developed after reporting on conflicts and natural disasters throughout Asia.

Lloyd had suffered nightmares and depression, Haq said at the time.

The father of two has expressed remorse for his actions and underwent counselling in prison.
